Why Some Roofs Can Be Walked On And Others Can't

by William Gerard

If you've ever wondered whether you can walk on your roof without damaging or risking your safety, the answer is not so simple. It depends on several factors, such as the type, material, slope, and age of your roof, and the weather conditions as well as your footwear. It might not be suitable for your roof if you walk on it, but there are also modifications you can make to your roof so that it's walkable.

Why You Shouldn't Walk on Most Residential Roofs

Roofs are not meant to withstand the weight and pressure of someone walking on them. You can cause cracks, dents, tears, or punctures in your roofing materials, especially if they are made of asphalt shingles, clay tiles, slate, or wood. Over time, this can lead to leaks, mold, rot, or structural damage. You can also damage the flashing, vents, gutters, or skylights attached to your roof.

Don't Void Your Warranty

Many roofing manufacturers and contractors offer warranties that cover defects or damages to your roof for a certain period. However, these warranties often have exclusions that void the coverage if you walk on your roof without authorization or proper equipment. You may pay for repairs or replacements out of your pocket if you violate the warranty terms.

You Can Injure Yourself

Walking on your roof is dangerous and can result in serious injuries or even death. You can slip, trip, or fall off the edge of your roof, especially if it is steep, wet, icy, or windy. You should always wear safety gear if you have to walk on your roof for any reason.

Some Roofs Can Be Walked On

While most residential roofs are not meant to be walked on, others can be. These roofs are usually flat or low-sloped and have a reinforced structure and a durable surface supporting foot traffic.

Green Roofs

These roofs have vegetation planted to provide environmental benefits such as insulation, stormwater management, air quality improvement, and wildlife habitat. Green roofs usually have a waterproof membrane, a drainage layer, a growing medium, and plants on top of the roof deck. They may also have walkways or patios for people to enjoy the green space.

Deck Roofs

These roofs have wooden or composite decking material installed to create an outdoor living space. Deck roofs usually have a waterproof membrane or a rubberized coating underneath the decking material to prevent leaks and damage to the roof deck. They may also have railings, stairs, furniture, or lighting fixtures to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of the deck.

Walking on your roof is only advisable if you have a roof designed to be walked on. Contact a local roofing contractor to learn more.
