What To Look For In A Roof Repair Estimate

by William Gerard

Are you in need of a new roof on your home? Are you looking to hire a local roofing contractor to get the job done? If so, you'll want to know about what to look for in your estimate.

The Roof Components

It's important for a roofing contractor to break down all of the roof components that will be installed on your roof, with costs for each individual line item. This includes decking replacement, drip edges, ventilation, ice and water shield, underlayment, flashing, and the shingle material itself.

In addition, there should be details next to all of these line items with specific information about what is being put on your roof. This includes the color of the drip edge, the style and color of the shingles, and the type of ridge cap that will be used. You'll even want to see details about where flashing will be replaced or installed.

The Labor

Labor can be calculated in a few different ways, and it's important to know what you are paying for. Some roofing contractors will include the labor in the line items for the roofing components, and others will list the labor separately. Make sure you understand how much you are paying for labor for each of the items that have been laid out as part of the new roof installation.

The Installation Procedures

You will also want to know the method that will be used for the roof installation. If you are nailing asphalt shingles, this should even be specific enough to list if the nails will be hand driven or applied with a nail gun. You'll also want to know how many nails will be installed per shingle. Other types of methods to look for include how the outside of your home will be protected. Will the roofing contractor cover your shrubs? Will they use a magnet rake to pick up nails?

The Disclaimers

Reading over the disclaimers of a roofing estimate is crucial to know that the job will be done right. See if the roofing contractor will cover any rain damage if it were to rain during the roof installation. There should also be coverage for if drywall is damaged from the vibrations caused by the installation.

The Warranty

Roofs should have material and labor warranties associated with the installation. You should understand how both warranties work and how you can use them if it is necessary. You can even ask about hypothetical situations and how they would be covered.
