The Repairs You Should Have Done To Your Roof When Damage Starts

by William Gerard

Your roof is vulnerable to different types of damage. Sometimes, these problems happen when the roof is new, or they may be due to average wear. Therefore, repairs will be needed throughout the life of your roof. The following roof repairs need to be done as soon as you notice the damage:

Storm Damage to New or Old Roofs

The damage to the roof of your home can often be storm damage and happen almost right after the installation. Therefore, it is good to inspect your roof regularly to know when there is damage that needs to be repaired. Times when you should inspect the roof for storm damage include:

  • After storms
  • After high winds
  • Annually

You want to have your roof inspected to find problems with storm damage and repair them before they become costlier to fix.

Dealing with Debris and Shingle Wear

The debris around your home can also cause damage to your roof. There are all sorts of debris that can damage shingles. Some of these problems can include:

  • Tree branches falling on shingles
  • Roofing falling off and causing damage
  • Wind-blown debris causing damage to the roofing

The debris that falls on or off your roof can damage it at any time. Therefore, you want to have this damage repaired.

Moss and Fungus Damage to Shingles

The shade trees around your home can cause further damage due to moss and fungus. These problems can be serious issues that shorten the life of the roofing. The signs of fungus damage to your roofing include:

  • Deformed shingles
  • Visible moss growth
  • Lichen growth (less visible than moss in some cases)
  • Moisture problems and water damage

The fungus problems will need to be repaired, but they can also be prevented. You may want to use roofing materials with zinc in them or zinc strips to help prevent these issues.

General Wear and When to Repair Before a Replacement

Even if you need to replace your roof soon, there still may be some emergency repairs that need to be done.  You may want to have some of the following problems repaired while you wait to have your roof replaced:

  • Worn flashing and seal materials
  • Minor punctures and leaks
  • Replacing missing shingles
  • Installing emergency roof tarps

The issues with wear often need temporary repairs before replacing your shingles. Therefore, you may want to ask a roofing service about doing these quick repairs whenever they inspect.

The repairs that your roof will need will only worsen if you neglect them. Therefore, you may want to call a roof repair service to have your home inspected and repairs done before they become worse.
