Three Signs To Look For That Indicate Roof Damage

by William Gerard

When the wet and snowy season is upon you, it's up to you to ensure that your roof is up to the task. However, not everyone knows what to look for, and climbing up on the roof itself can be dangerous. These three simple signs can help you to determine if you need your roof repaired before the wet months really get going without having to set foot on your roof.

Denting

The first thing you can look for without even getting on the roof is to look for dents. Scan the surface of the roof and look for any areas that seem like they've dipped beneath the surrounding surface or have become pitted.

This typically indicates that water damage has already happened. The roof is sagging as a result. If you notice this damage, you should contact residential roofers immediately for help, as your roof is unlikely to hold up through the next major storm.

Missing Shingles

Another bad sign is when you're missing shingles from your roof. Shingle roofs need all of their shingles in order to protect the remainder of the roof from rain, cold, and even wind. When a shingle falls off, it leaves a part of the roof exposed, like the area that's been dented. While missing shingles don't necessarily mean that your roof is on the verge of failure, if you don't get help for it at this stage, you could be looking at a much bigger repair further down the road.

Look for Granules

The final step requires a ladder so you can check out what's going on in your rain gutters. Rain gutters collect wash-off from your roof, so they're an invaluable tool to see if your roof is intact.

If you notice gravel chunks or granules in the rain gutter, that's a very bad sign. These granules are adhered to the shingles on your roof and are designed to help make them water-resistant and sunlight-resistant. Typically, once these granules fall off, it's only a matter of time before the entire shingle falls off, too, as it's no longer protected from the majority of weather effects.

If you've noticed that any or all three of these signs are going on with your roof, you should reach out for help right away. Putting off any kind of minor roof repair will only come back to bite you in the long run. Get the help that you need now so that the repair doesn't take as long and doesn't cost as much.
