3 Improvements That Can Give Your Conventional Asphalt Shingles More Efficiency

by William Gerard

There are many different types of roofing materials that you can have installed on your roof, but asphalt shingles may still be the most economical solution for your home. They can also be the less energy efficient choice for roofing, but there are ways you can improve the energy efficiency of your asphalt shingles. Here are some improvements that you may want to consider for asphalt shingles to reduce energy loss from the roof of your home:

1. Add A Light Colored Roof Coating For A Cooler Roof

If your roof is a dark color, this can contribute to the heat gain of your home during hot days. To reduce heat gain, a lighter roof can reflect heat and keep your home cool, which is called a cool roof. If you do not want to invest in a roof replacement, one option for a cool roof is to have a roof coating applied to your shingles. This is a membrane that is painted on the roof that will also help protect your shingles and extend the life of your roof.

2. Install An Energy Efficient Underlayment With A Roof Replacement

If you are planning on replacing your roof, you may still want to use asphalt shingles but still make them more energy efficient. To do this, you may want to consider improvements like energy efficient underlayments. This can include the deck sheathing beneath the roof, as well as the moisture barrier or felt paper. Instead of conventional felt paper, a modern material can be used that helps improve energy efficiency, as well as the longevity of your roof.

3. Add Insulation Board Beneath The Roofing To Stop Energy Loss

You may have a roof that is not that old but still want to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Instead of doing improvements on the roof, you can start in the attic. Rigid insulated foam board can be installed in the rafters of your home, beneath the roof to help improve energy efficiency. Another option that you may want to consider is to have your attic sprayed with spray foam insulation, which will provide you with the same benefits.

These are some improvements that you may want to consider to make your asphalt shingles more energy efficient. If you are ready for a roof replacement or some of these improvements, contact a roofing contractor, such a those at B & B Roofing, and talk with them about some of these solutions for your home.
